"spray, spray, spray!" could mean a lot of different things.

I think I'll go with a "well then, talk to the pepper spray, bitch!"

It is all about clearly communicating to the subject how he or she will be "consequenced" in language he or she understands.

After hearing of the experiences of "overspray" here and because I work unarmed I will be
reaching for my baton first (a non-lethal and lethal use option).

I don't have a set distance, it all depends on how aggressively the subject is behaving and if he is armed (with an edged or blunt weapon, that is, if he's carrying a firearm my tactic is to run as fast as possible to the opposite direction :P ) and how he is responding to issued warnings before I'll make the decision to spray him. Usually carrying stream, I find it a good "general" type since I might expect to have to use it both indoors and outdoors.

I don't have that advantage with the MK4 Peter Jones that I carry, though otherwise it's a damn good item. :P

Aside from the gun part, the latter example I referred to actually was one where at least a couple of the subjects seemed to have taken amphetamine in addition to the booze. Another officer pulled out the OC first so I had a couple of seconds of "ASP vs OC?" thinking, though I went for the latter figuring the baton might not achieve a desired effect. A third officer in the situation told me later on that he had the same problem.

Really? How many different things might it mean? I was referring to communicating with additional officers, not attempting to intimidate the subject with the size of my...canister. I don't advertize the OC to the subject beforehand.
