I currently work as an unarmed guard in Knoxville TN. I do have an Armed Guard license but currently work unarmed. I am interested in auto patrol as I like to drive and think it would be interesting and ever changing environment as opposed to sitting all day at a desk.... Does anyone here know of any companies in the Knoxville TN area that has this service? I would like to apply to them even if they do not currently have an opening. I appreciate any help provided.![]()

I called and spoke to someone there and he said there were no auto patrol positions available but wanted to talk about an unarmed floater position..... it paid a whopping $8.75 per hour. WOW. How does someone agree to that pay rate?

Automobile Patrol
Myabe you could consider working for an armored truck company. They seem to hire frequently and you wouldn't be stuck inside. You could also use your Armed Guard license. Then, if it isn't to your liking, you would be gaining experience as you look for something better.

I'm not sure about Tennessee but Securitas has a mobile patrol position. I actually had to work a detail with my partner at a site where Securitas was also patrolling. Really bizarre. Also Allied Barton, i believe, has this type of patrol. It's usually the bigger companies that can afford vehicles and have enough sites to patrol. Run of the mill security companies and small time/new companies just have a hard time grabbing multiple accounts, maintaining vehicles, buying vehicles, and all those things. My company has a North, South, East, West "Road Patrol" division which is 24-7 and we use Crown Vics and Impalas. We do drive by patrols and call into dispatch and also go inside buildings to do buidling walks. All officers in every division of our company do vehicle stops on suspicious vehicles on our properties and write tickets, tresspass warnings, or call dispatch to send the police out. I don't work in the road patrol division but i ride along once in a while with a friend of mine for a few hours.

Consider Campus Security
I recently took a patrol officer position with a private University. They have a 45 officer department working 24/7. They also have a 15 vehicle fleet they use to patrol the campus. All vehicles are marked and equipped with emergency lights and siren. We do traffic stops but only on campus. We do a lot of mobile patrol - answering calls from dispatch for a wide variety of things. We also write a lot of reports for these calls.
if you are interested in this sort of work, do a Google search for colleges and universities in your area. From this list, go to their websites and find their "jobs" category. Sift through these sites looking for opportunities. Even if nothing is available now, check back every week or two. You may find something that is interesting to you. Good luck!
