I came across this new story and wanted to see what you guys think?
I know we have another post that is already sorta talking about this hear:do schools need armed guards. But all this talk really makes me wonder if it's really going to happen or not.Several mayors in Palm Beach County came before the school board Wednesday, asking the district to install metal detectors in every school for the safety of students.
Masters was joined by the mayors of Belle Glade, Boynton Beach and Mangonia Park. The group is spearheading a petition to put metal detectors in every school. So far the petition has garnered more than 100 signatures online.
The mayors argued that facilities such as airports, court rooms and even the school board building had metal detectors.
"Children's lives are just as important," Masters said.
No school in the district utilizes metal detectors though hand-held detectors are often used at large sporting events.
I think even more important than having a walk through metal detector on the job is having a security officer that is armed. However, I still think it's important that schools implement metal detectors because I can sneak past a security officer ALL day long with a heavy duty gun in my bag and loads of ammo!
Besides, the cost of metal detectors for schools are barely even an officers pay for one month. If schools are going to hire a security officer it only makes since to pay the extra small price.
Just my opinion

All a metal detector does is decrease the chance of someone bringing a concealed weapon in the facility. All the machinery does is alert the screener if a certain amount of metal is detected. If a violent actor wants to perpetrate a shooting, they'll just go in guns blazing. Imo, the metal detector is like a 'panic button' for an alarm system; both provide a false sense of security for user/public.
Locks and alarms are only as good as the individuals that patrol and respond to them.

Would be cheaper to just make schools a less likely target by getting rid of the
Gun Free Zone.

I think the school districts should just invest in more GUN FREE SCHOOL ZONE signs. Perhaps with more signs, shooters would realize that they are not allowed inside schools and these shootings would stop.

We have them in Charlotte, but... not as helpful in all situations
We actually have many schools here in Charlotte that have metal detectors, but that's because years ago we had lots of problems gangs and the youth members bringing weapons to school and getting into fights. In those cases, they were merely sneaking in the weapons "in case" a fight broke out between opposing gang members. So sure, the meta detectors helped "discourage" those individuals from trying to sneak them in (though they always found a way because we always kept hearing about another "gun/knife/weapon" found at these schools.
BUT, when we're talking about in those rare cases where a disturbed individual is fully planning on coming to a school to kill and/or inflict hard... I have to agree with HotelSecurity and msovfin... a meta detector isn't going to stop a thing.
NOW, if that metal detector is staffed by an ARMED security guard (or preferably two,) then that MIGHT provide a higher level of security and prevention of violence, but they have to be looking beyond the metal detector... as well as have these detectors staffed at every entrance into the school.
Even then, if someone has the "will," they'll find a way to cause harm!

See... I have to agree DEFINITELY with the armed resource officers. We've had them in our schools here in NC and maybe it's a false sense of ABSOLUTE security... but it is definitely a deterrent. And let's face it, I'm not sure we can provide a 100% safe environment... so the more deterrents that are proven to work... maybe the better?
