Don't you love being in an industry where doing the right thing gets you in trouble? I have been there before, trust me. Hindsight is 20-20. Drunks are unpredictable.

Wow, crazy! It reminds me of what is going on at the site I am working. I am a part of a special assignment for a client who has had a few suicides on their property the last few years and a number of attempts the last few months. The recent attempts have all been hush hush since they don't want other people thinking this is the go to place for suicides.

The guy lived? Darwin failed, then. Too bad.

Several months ago we had a female at the top of a parking garage in distress. A security officer noticed her and tried to talk to her but she wasn't responding he requested a Spanish speaking officer thinking that was the problem. She climbed up on the ledge. The officer tried to grab her but only managed to grab her purse which was over her shoulder. She slipped the purse and over she went. I was lucky enough to be first on scene where she was still twitching. The officer was very distraught rightly so.

All these stories of people trying to talk jumpers down or grabbing at them and the person jumping seems very odd to me.

It's been my experience that there are two types of people. Those who kill themselves and those who are seeking attention. The people who are going to kill themselves, do so and we find them later. Those seeking attention make sure people see them and don't do it.

I've been on plenty of scenes where someone has jumped and they are found on the ground, dead or at least clinically dead. I've never seen nor even heard of an actual case where someone has threatened to jump... got the people all looking at them and begging them not to and then jumped anyway... outside of television/movies of course.

I have. Not on duty but 2 years ago I was downtown & heard about a guy threatening to jump from an 8th floor balcony on the street next to where I was on my scanner. Police, fire & ambulances arrived on the scene. He jumped about a half hour later.
I enforce rules and regulations, not laws.
