Convenience Store Clerk Kills Would-Be Robber

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Police have identified the man shot and killed trying to rob an Old Monrovia Road convenience store Thursday night a Rodney Cordell Pride of Huntsville, police spokesman Harry Hobbs said.

An employee of Atlantis Corner at 1176 Old Monrovia Road told police that a man with a pistol entered the store at about 8:50 p.m. Thursday, police said. The employee shot the would-be robber, who left the store and was found by police in the parking lot, a west precinct police report said.

The wounded man was taken to Huntsville Hospital where he died, the report said.

Pride, 32, has been sentenced to prison at least twice previously on a cocaine possession charge and a robbery charge, state court records show.

He was arrested in December 2002 for cocaine possession and second-degree marijuana possession, court records show. He pleaded guilty to the cocaine possession charge and was sentenced to participate in the drug court diversion program, records show.

But, Pride violated the conditions of the program, and as part of a plea deal, was then sentenced to three years in prison, records show. The marijuana possession charge was dropped, according to court records.

Pride was arrested in September 2005 on a robbery charge and pleaded guilty to third-degree robbery, state court records show. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, records show.

Hobbs said the store employee "has not been charged yet." Police are interviewing witnesses, he said.

Police will not release any further information about the incident now because it is an active investigation, Hobbs said.

I won't shed a tear for the dead in this one. The clerk ended up resigning his position. No charges were ever filed against the clerk. A clear-cut case of self defense.
