Default Question about working security in Florida/private company

OK, I will try to keep this short so bear with me. Someone I know owns a security company. They asked me to help out with a new contract they picked up. I said no problem and did it. I really enjoyed the company I was working with (not the company i was working FOR) so I put up with a lot from the company I was employed by. Well the company who employed me is now $1800 behind on paying me. I did some research due to a few things happening and found out some VERY messed up stuff. I did not know you need a Class D license to be a security guard. He knowingly put me on a post without me going to class. He also told the company he had $2m in general liability insurance and he has none. He DOES have a B, G, and D license himself. But no insurance. I found out he was over billing them, confronted him, and he lied. Needless to say with everything going on (oh and he has us wearing actual police uniforms from the county next to us with security badges and no business name on them..again NOT legal from what I read) I quit and told the company who hired him everything. They obviously are going to cancel the contract with him. But they want me to stay on. He has a "non-compete" clause saying no employee can solicit a company for a year after BUT I didnt..they asked me. And I am a 1099 contractor not an employee of his. So that shouldnt be an issue and they have their lawyers sending him letters and are going to handle him well. My question is what options do I have to work for them? I look at club bouncers and loss prevention people who work directly for the companies they are at and dont even have a Class D license..and they provide security. I can walk around my business and home with a gun and need no permit. I would go get my Class D and wont carry a gun, but will a taser so thats ok but do I need to open a Class B business to work there for them? Seems like a lot to drop roughly a grand to get a B license and insurance and pay insurance every month to work weekends for this company. So I ask..what do I do? What are my options? And how do I go about doing what is required? Thank you very much for any help you could give in this matter!!

What part of Florida are you in? Your post was kind of cryptic and confusing. check the link http://www.floridasecuritylicense.com/ and find a class close to you. From my experience most schools are hole in the wall type places and very boring but it gets you your licenses. I would stay away from any security until you get your D unarmed license and then get your G armed license. most can be done back to back at the same school. If you work for the company that invited you and you have your licenses you are ok but if they are wrong you are out of a job so better to make sure everyone is on the up and up.

    Learn Chapter 493 ( http://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2010/Chapter493 )

As for the taser don't waste your time and money until you find somewhere that allows you to carry one.

Sorry if it was confusing. I went to work for a buddy who has a B license company. He never told me I needed any license. After almost 4 months various things werent adding up so I did research on security in florida. Seen you need a license. D unarmed, G armed. I quit working for buddy am reporting him to the state for about 7 infractions of the security handbook..no insurance, falsifying stuff, uniform not legal, etc..company I was on post for wants to hire me directly..will be getting my D then my own B company..had questions about laws regarding working for a private company and not needing license as I will be working this weekend without one will be going to school next week. I will be buying a taser and carrying it at this location. Sorry if that was in any way confusing, a lot going on and it can make your fingers and mind work at different speeds.

I may be wrong but I would make sure that you carrying a taser is in the contract that way you are covered. You don't need to deploy it and then have the client say I never said he could carry a Taser and leave you out to dry.

    Good luck

I understand what you are saying and thank you. I actually went to them and talked to them and they agree to go from a gun to a taser for safety and tactical reasons. They never thought of it the way I presented it and agreed with me.
