This has to be the most disgusting thing I've read coming from the DHS since Obama took office, and that's saying something.
Apparently, armed Border Patrol officers are now being trained in "active shooter" situations to do exactly what an office clerk would do. You are to run away. Run very, very fast and hide. But if you're still cornered by the shooter after all of this jogging around, well then you ARE allowed to THROW THINGS AT THEM.

I'd throw something at them, all right. I'd throw a 180-grain piece of .40 caliber hollowpoint lead at 990 feet per second, and why should I be disciplined if I need a bit of help doing it? I'm old, and my arm isn't what it used to be.
(And philosophically, tell me this: You say it's fine for me to throw a one-pound paperweight at the shooter at, say, 65 mph, which could be fatal, but if I use a gun to "throw" a smaller object at higher speed - but perhaps with the exact same force per square inch - I'm wrong. I can't make any sense out of it.)
Now, here's what I'd do for active-shooters at ICE/BP facilities, based in part on the findings of the excellent NYPD Active Shooter Study:
Typically, in AS situations, a facility will go into a lock-down protocol. People take refuge in offices, etc. Fine, but we can do better:
1. I'd train all of the department office staff in basic close-quarter combat firearm skills instead of this garbage. Believe it or not, this is a VERY crude skill to learn (compared with, say, target shooting, "Hogan's Alley" shooting, etc), and it doesn't take as long to teach even lay people how to plug a crud at close quarters as you might think. They spend more time teaching clerks how not to screw up the INS database.
2. I'd install a fail-safe notification system that would reach every square inch of the facility. Personnel taking refuge would be responsible to take citizens in their area with them.
3. I'd make sure that there was secure access to a firearm in every inner office. This would be a firearm of the type everyone was trained to use.
4. I'd put the best locks and barriers on each office door, which would be proper gauge metal doors.
5. I'd make sure that there was redundant secure reporting comm system within each office so personnel can report their location and status.
6. I'd make sure that the desks and tables in each office were of the type of material and construction that could be used as barriers.
7. I'd hold quarterly all-hands drills to keep everyone sharp, just like we do for fires.
8. Among the sworn personnel on staff, I'd create AS teams and these would receive more extensive training, of course.
Somehow, I think my way is better. What say you? What first aid, sanitation and other emergency supplies do you think should be distributed among these "refuge" offices, considering that some AS situations have gone on for hours?

Fox News is pretty bias when it comes to news reporting. Find a better source not some
republican outlet.

First of all, if you knew anything at all about Fox News you would know that it is not a "Republican outlet". In fact, it's the one news outlet on which I can be guaranteed to hear both liberals and conservatives arguing their case. This happens all day long on Fox. And the fact that it's not left-leaning is what makes the liberal media call it "conservative".
More to the point, your argument is called "poisoning the well", and it's a very well-known, fundamental error in logic.
I've proposed an AS protocol and asked for comments on that, so please stick to the subject.Last edited by SecTrainer; 06-29-2012 at 06:40 PM.
