A few years ago, I can't remember if it was on the RAC or eblock watch website, someone claimed that this happened to a friend of theirs.
Before 1994 South Africa had a very strong & dedicated Police force who had to work hard for their rank.
When the ANC took over a lot of policemen did not appreciate "what they call Christmas tree decorations “walking into their police force & receiving rank & decorations as if it came out of a lucky packet.
That is when most of your best policemen left the police force & joined the private sector.
Crime started creeping into the police force & criminals started committing armed robberies with R1, R4 & R5 rifles.
I am not saying all policemen are corrupt, there are some very dedicated policemen in South Africa but they are out weighed 10 to 1.
Here is just an example of what I am talking about.

When I arrest a criminal, my work doesn’t end when I hand him over to the police I need to follow the case until he is sentenced otherwise he walks out the back door.

We have the South African Police Services which polices the whole country & the Metropolitan Police which police the cities. The Metro Police are actually more Peace Officers than Policemen

Robert Mc Bride was Chief of Metro Police for the East Rand.

A Policeman deals with criminal law e.g. Murder, rape, robbery, assault, theft. Etc
Peace officer deals more with traffic offences & municipal bylaws e.g. loitering, Seizure of property or goods, Talking on a cell phone while driving, disturbing the peace, anything related to the liquor act etc.
I used to have the definition for both; I just can’t find it now.
