I'm posting this here for a user named Carl who originally posted the question in our comments on a 2009 Fire Code updates article.
Here's what he asked (I would suggest responding here in the forums, rather than on the article):
"I have a four story mixed use building, third and fourth floor have sleeping areas with common area bathrooms / showers a total of 27 sleeping rooms on each of the two floors totaling 54 rooms, the remaining two floors have a Gym with basketball court and a weight / exersize gym exactly like a YMCA the building has a sprinkler system throughout including in all the closets and sleeping rooms. with a use classification by the architect of R-2 on the two top sleeping area floors and an A-3 use on the bottom two floors. Do the sleeping quarters require smoke protection are pull stations required throughout obviously it requires horn strobes throughout not sure about smokes and pulls. this is in New Jersey. I have also seen a change in code that was updated in February of 2011 with sprinkler exclusions. Can anyone comment on this. Thank you"
