    So Pathetic It Bears Repeating

So, on my last tour, I heard something so pathetic and utterly ignorant that it bears repeating here.

I will preface this by saying that the city in which I am trapped has a major drug problem. Mainly marijuana, cocaine, oxycodone and ecstacy.....But boy do the people of this city love their marijuana....People refer to their plants as "their girls" or "their kids" and talk about nothing except weed....

Anyways, we recently had an incident and now the client has decided to enforce their Fit For Work policy, which is a physical examination and a piss test. This created a big thing, and a lot of people quit entirely....But that's not the pathetic part, the pathetic part is a conversation I heard between two client employees.

"I can't believe that ****** would bring in a piss test....I can't believe any employer in this city would ask for a piss test....Sodom & Gomorrah is a GREEN city, everyone smokes weed!"

The nerve of the company for wanting workers who are fit for duty! The nerve of companies for wanting top-quality and not the **** left at the bottom of the barrell....What in the hell kind of world do we live in!? Are people really this f@C1<ing retarded?

Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Stop the world, let me off.

I can only imagine what the folks in Washington and Colorado have to put up with since it was legalized....

I'm actually totally fine with marijuana use. Provided that it is used outside of work hours, with no effect whatsoever on work. If you're in an area where it is legal, all the power to you. If you are in an area where it is illegal, then you are committing a crime. It's really not complicated, and the employer should have every right to drug screen their employees.

I remember when Drug Tests took a week or more to 'come back' and this was in construction.

You took the test, went straight to work, and 'depending' if you came back positive they might fire you. Mostly they would 'retest' to 'double check' and as long as levels were falling you were given a pass if you were otherwise OK with foreman.

If you can't determine someone is worth a F%$ in a week on a construction site YOU are the problem. LOL.

Not to mention the fact the Union kinda required them to go to work and start billing hours, no one week 'wait time', so you COULD have guy high as a kite putting OTHER lives at risk.

Drug War is all nonsense and politics and some CYA stuff.

Not sure a physical exam would fly too well in USA. We have ADA which requires employers to make 'reasonable' efforts to accommodate disabilities of employees, even during HIRING PROCESS, so unless you are hiring rodeo clowns if you walk in the door that is all the exam required.

You will see more and more of it. Then you have the people that use it "medicinally," and you can't discriminate against them. I have no problem with cancer patients using it. I have a problem with it being "prescribed" for all kinds of ailments by "health care professionals" which includes everything from LPNs to the chick in the strip mall that does aura readings while you drink herbal tea.

What really frosts my cupcake (oh no, now I've made all the stoners hungry) is how we're playing fast and loose with all kinds of statistics, from DUI arrests to number of teenagers using. Its all to make it seem OK and not having a impact. It IS having a an impact, and I would say continue watching WA and CO and see what happens - I'm betting the welfare rolls in both states will increase significantly in the next 5 years.

The one thing I've noticed is more commercials late at night for drug addiction treatment programs - right after a certain restaurant's notorious "late night munchie meal" aimed at a specific audience...
