I'm a big fan of DSC and was raised on their alarm control panels, but they have recently done something that I think falls into a grey area. Many of you may have heard of their latest panel called the Alexor. Bundled with it is a Tl265GS IP/GPRS communicator and it is very popular in the DIY community.

What people do not always realise when they purchase the Tl265GS bundle is that it is completely useless without a subscription to Connect 24. That is understandable for the GPRS side of the communicator as there is a cellular network provider and SIM card involved, but why has the IP side of the communicator been crippled?

Consumers hoping for IP comms now, with the option of adding cellular later, are getting a nasty shock as DSC "forgot" to mention the requirement of Connect 24 in their End User brochure.

Ethical or not?

yeah, and you can't buy an iPhone (in the US, at least), without paying for a two year service contract! What's the deal with that?

Seriously, in answer to your question, it's a scumbag tactic but all too common nowadays.

I'm a software developer in the security industry - NO WAY can I afford an iPhone

....but if I could come up with a solution to the Tl265GS problem, then just maybe I could

Pre-pay all the way. Unlimited talk and text (on Verizons network, but not a Verizon owned company) for $45 a month. Contracts are for suckers.

hi. I am an alarm installer and having issues with ip modules from dsc (TL-150 and TL-250).the main reason custumer want to go ip is to monitor their connection with the central station. But for some reason these module sometimes lose their connection and central station calls for internet down even when customer says their internet looks fine. DSC technical support tells me to put the module ip address in the DHCP reservation list. Central station says its a faulty internet connection.
Any ideas, anyone???
