Looking for a cheap CCTV system for my house. I know you get what you pay for, but I'm on a tight budget. I saw this online, and was curious if someone could tell me if it's worth it or not. I have no idea what all those specs at the bottom mean.

Thanks.

SoCal, were I you I'd go to COSTCO and look at their systems. My son installed one tied to his alarm company's central office after his home was broken into. It works like a charm.

I can't speak for the quality, but the specs are ok. You'll have to buy the cables, unless you have wire & connectors and know how to do them, so that's another $100. These kits, from Costco and Sam's also, are pretty much throw away when they break.

The cameras are wide angle (3.9mm), so you won't see much far away (well they will, but things will be tiny), they're meant for a close, wide area. Also, it doesn't say the range of the IR's but I would guess 30'.

The record resolution is pretty good, and the frame rate is spread across all cameras, so it's 15 frames per second per camera. More information here:

Thanks for the help Bill and integrator. I've worked with lots of CCTV systems, but honestly don't know very much about them. integrator, the frame rate demo was very helpful.

Bill, I have a Costco membership, but I didn't now they had CCTV systems. I'll definitely have to check them out as well.

Basically, my wife wants the system installed because we've been having issues with our neighbors son so I also need to research if these systems can be monitored via the internet. I know some can. She also wants a camera in our 2 y.o. daughters room so she can check on her at night without having to get up and go in there.

Again, thank you for the help gentlemen.

That one says it has a network interface. You need to have high speed / broadband internet. DSL or Cable. If their aren't instructions for a DNS server, I can help you with some tips when the time comes. Basically you have to have a static IP, (Which most people don't. They cost more.) or use a DNS host that tracks your IP. They have free services out there that do that.

COSTCO also sells radio and cellular backup communications interfaces. Additionally, an alternative to radio and cellular backup communications is a phone line protection product. This technology protects both telephone network interface device and the phone line, so any tampering will trigger an alarm. Internet and cell phone monitoring are also possible along with real time date-stamp recording. This information can be presented to your neighbor or the police for legal action as necessary.
Monitoring your daughter's room is also possible.
Have a plan and rudimentary drawings to discuss with the COSTCO sales people. Ours here in northern Virginia are sharp and know their product line and limitations of product.
Enjoy the day,
Bill

I have seen these systems for sale at Sam's Club and Home Deport. I have purchased about a dozen of these systems for very limited use in retail store. They always worked well and some even had sound capabilities.

Good info all around gentlemen. Thanks again for all the input.

Are there specific classes I should look into so I can become more knowledgable about CCTV systems? Being that I work in this industry, I suppose it would benefit me to learn this stuff :D

Thanks again.

Curtis, he's basically a link spammer. He has built a shoddy website with generic information of no real use, and is trying to place his link (via signature) on a high-traffic site which is actually read by people who know what they're doing. Then he gets Google ad positions. It's the old domain squatting model, but version 2.0 adds a little bit of content to the domain squatting operation. All 6 of his posts are generic statements like "Home security cameras are good because they add security", and are mainly there to provide yet another link to his site. I think it's high time he gets the stick.

GeoffI know - I was just trying to ferret "Mattie" out. Besides my gut feeling, the real clue is "Mattie03's company is in Plano, Texas.:)
