I'm not making a ton of money 12.25 an hour, yet I pay 180.00 every two weeks, for sort of ok health insurance. I been there a year and a half and been a great employee, (never written up, at the highest paying account, good attendance etc.). I have not complained about insurance, I just pay it, and I greatful for it. My wife is pregnant, has a blood clot in her lung, and is a high risk pregnacy. Her one perscription alone is 5000.00 a month, of which we only have to pay a 40.00 copay. She has a lot of tests and apointments as well. Even with insurance were racking up a good size bill, but nowhere near what it would be without insurance. We are so greatful for what we have. I got a letter saying we are switching plans now, " sign up now and you could win an Ipod" It seems salery employees get to keep real health insurance like we have now, but come november 1st its gone for us hourly employees. They are doing this for the part time people they say, its suppost to help them out. The problem is its only saves me 60.00 a month and isn't health insurance. It dont cover pregnacy, on the most exspensive plan max benifits include 30 towards perscritions limited to 12, max of 2500 towards surgery, max 5000 toward critical illness like cancer, max of 700 for injuries like broken bones, 75 towars test but limited to 4 per year, 70 towards office visits, but limited to 6 visits. I am stuck without coverage now, though they offered me cobra which will cost me at least double what I was paying, and I can't stay on it past 18 months. I can't afford 40-50% of what I make going for insurance. I'm so angry at them, and they wont do anything for me. The worst part is the new plan is just a discount card, and not insurance. Everyone will pay in more than they get out, and if you have anything major happen your screwed. I never heard of a plan like this, I understand high deductible catastropic policies that cover the stuff you can't, but never heard of a plan that only covers small stuff and not very well. I'm not getting anywhere in this field so I'm going back to school. It seems the only good jobs go to people with good credit police and military, reguardless of experiance, and to get in an office job they take advantage of you, they work you to death night and day for a small salery. I give up I'm going to school for mortuary science since my criminal justice degree and years of experiance mean nothing.

Can you contact the company that already provides the insurance to see what it would cost you without the group plan?

You have a lot on your plate and a baby will not make it easier so I can see your frustration. Are you in a smaller town that does not have as many opportunities? Any government work nearby?

If your company sucks find a new job.

Is it a privately held or public company?

Does your state have an insurance plan for low-income wage earners?
A few of my officers who cannot afford our insurance get coverage through the Minnesota Care program. They get good coverage at a greatly reduced rate. It's as good as the plan I have through my wife's job that costs us over $400 a month.
I've been through what you're experiencing and I know it's not easy. I hope things get better for you and your family.

My company blows also for many reasons. However, to keep on topic, in the 2+ years I have been there, I went from starting at $11.00/HR as a Supervisor to $11.55/HR still as a Supervisor. I pay $23.00 every 2 weeks for medical, dental, vision insurance. I am a full-time employee.

Priorities change when you have a child on the way, and your wife has a pre-existing medical condition; being pregnant and having a blood clotting disorder. It's not necessarily easy to simply switch to a different security company.

Sideshow, if you look for another job I would strongly suggest you go to the head of human resources and ask what they can do when it comes to insurance. Sadly, it will most likely be nothing but still worth a shot.

If you're going to look at other companies make sure to have all the paperwork signed and the new insurance kicked in before you quit your current job. You may just have to work two full-time jobs until you're sure. Make sure not to tell the current company that you will quit, because if they get wind of it they may fire you.

Remember that you are lucky considering your company is telling you in advance. I currently work with one guy who's insurance company pulled out of our state and didn't tell anyone. He found out when he got a call from the doctors office stating the insurance company doesn't operate in our state. Interesting thing is they charged him a whole month and only provided him with one week of coverage. His wife was pregnant and the new insurance companies wouldn't cover her because it was a, "pre-existing medical condition."

I feel for you Sideshow, and please send me a PM if there is anything I can help out with.
