which one is better? the scorching debate continues...

The DVRs in the Security Market today were divided into 2 major Groups; the Linux-Based DVRs and the Windows-Based DVRs. Each kind has both pros and cons. One has greater advantage over the other for specific applications. To help the readers better understand the significant differences between the two and which is more appropriate to use for a desired function, please share your knowledge on how you determine one as more advantageous and more efficient compared to the other.

Please feel free to visit my site as well and share your own views: http://security-made-easy.blogspot.com/2008/07/linux-based-dvr-vs-windows-based-dvr.html

You missed yet another category called embedded systems that uses proprietary language... Sanyo, Panasonic, GE and few others still their own machine language based solutions...

My personal preference has always been Linux based solutions... Heck, all my workstations still running some variation of Linux distro...

I think it depends on your tech. guys experience.

Most CCTV engineers I know are windows users. And I guess they would be confused where to check log files in linux. :)

Probably one word that can best describe Linux based DVRs or even embedded non-windows based DVRs is - STABILITY! Most of maintenance is already part of the Linux architecture.

They are very easy to maintain and even easier to upgrade (in most cases at least). Just be very careful of the off shore fly by night operators and their bogus major claims to fame... Most are here from few months to few years and then they suddenly disappear. If you intend to buy Linux based DVRs, at least go with some reputable name company and with decent track record and always ask for existing users opinion...
