Be safe, be seen?

Do you/your company utilize or mandate safety equipment aside from 'weapons' to stay safe out there, I'm talking reflective stripes, Hi Visibility clothing, roof lights and so on?

So often when we talk about safety here we tend to think, defending ourselves by use of force options and body armor Hand/long guns, batons, OC (pepper) spray, tasers, whatever. Sure it makes sense to me for such situations.

But how about threats to our safety in a nonviolent situation? i.e. you're on your post/site conducting a traffic stop or out of your "secure environment" for whatever reason; traffic offence, directing traffic during a power outage or regular traffic duties that you do, preventing unauthorized people from accessing the scene, directing emergency vehicles (EMS, Fire) to the scene.

I purposefully left out Police as those situations tend to relate to use of force situations that we are already involved in.

Are you wearing a uniform with reflective striping, traffic vest? What color, orange or the newest trend in safety, the "Hi Vis. green" which also has reflective silver on it? Do you activate your roof lights (if you have them) when you are doing a traffic stop or directing traffic, does your vehicle even have roof lights?

Basically I am asking, do you do your job as safely as possible. I like to think to myself; Am I as visible/safe as I can be? I can understand situations that you DON'T want to be visible too, but someone else can post that one.

My guys always wear ANSI class 2 vests when doing any work that requires them to be around traffic, weather in a parking lot or on the street. The couple of people that do the funeral details always have the class 2 vests, shirts, or jackets on, they also light up the daylight with all the lights they have on the cars. The couple posts where they do nothing but traffice control the guys have the gloves with the yeild and stop signs on them.

For construction sites, they all have company supplied hard hats and reflective vests.

Everyone gets bloodborne pathogen training, first aid and cpr training, as well as employee right to know and back safety for officers that have a lifting requirement at their post.

We do some but there is so much more that could be done and in some cases should be done.
