SOUTH BEND — A 63-year-old security guard died late Saturday evening from severe trauma to the head after a patron at the South Bank Lounge attacked him early Saturday, police said.
James E. Muddiman Sr. was trying to get people to leave the bar at 3 a.m. when 27-year-old Joshua Kati assaulted him, police said. Muddiman was treated at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.
Kati, a South Bend resident, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery and battery resulting in serious bodily injury.
The incident took place in the 1700 block of Lincoln Way East.

Even at the risk of playing devil's advocate, I'm gonna bite on this one. Why in the world is a 63-year-old working security at a bar, or anywhere for that matter? Not saying that all 63-year-olds are frail and decrepit geezers, but most of them can easily be overpowered by a 27-year-old. Kinda reminds me of the prison inmate a few years back who was able to overpower the deputy who was escorting him; the inmate was over six feet tall and over 200 lbs, while the deputy who was escorting him was a small frail woman in her 50s. Many of you may remember that the inmate was able to overpower her, grab her gun, and kill her and several other people inside a courthouse (can't remember the state), before he was subdued by court security. It seems to me that anyone working in a high threat environment should be required to meet some stringent physical fitness standards before being allowed to work there.

I believe it was near Atlanta, Georgia.

Oh, dear. Respectfully, I must tell you that you're dead wrong about that misconception, TUBoy. Let me caution every forum member that some of us cops and ex-cops can testify that some of the toughest fights we've had have been with "old men"...especially one who has nothing to lose. Don't ever make such assumptions or you'll wind up on your a$$, and a lot of men over 70 can easily put you there. Quite a number of guys in their 50s, 60s and 70s work out at my gym, in fact, and some have arms that I'd bet are as big around as your head, TUBoy.
And while we're at it, make no assumptions about women, either. I know a female prison guard who I'd give odds on against most men. She is one tough mama.
I know a guy 5'6" who has no problems handling guys over 6' and outweighing him by 100 lb.
I have no qualms whatsoever hiring men who are past their 50s for security work if they're in reasonably good shape, as many of them are these days. No qualms what-so-ever.
MAKE NO ASSUMPTIONS based on anyone's age, gender or size! If they're trained, and they're tough-minded, you've got a hot proposition on your hands.
