some laptop computers have a built-in camera.

I'd like to be able to "marry" a remote wireless camera to my desktop
computer.

Can any of you "cctv gurus" out there provide information and possibly a web site so I can find what I might need and possibly any software that would be necessary?

Thanks in advance

Let me be the first to say, huh?

Do you want a wireless network camera? If so, you'll need a wireless 802.11g router. The Linksys WVC200 is a quality wireless PTZ, available for $247.50

Could you be a little more specific.
Do you want to put a wireless camera that transmits to your desktop to view remotely?
Or, do you want to put a camera on your desktop to view remotely?
Or, you want a wireless camera placed somewhere that you can view on your desktop?

Any one is doable fairly easily. Just need to know what your looking for.

Sorry I was not clear about the application. I was thinking I would be
needing a router along with a video card.........was not sure.
I'll check out the equipment info. you passed along.

I actually want to place a wireless camera some where that can be viewed on my desktop

All you need is a wireless router and that Linkstys PTZ. As an added bonus, forward the ports on your router and you can control and view that little sucker from any PC on the planet, just about.

i just got one. i looked throught the reviews to weed out the ip cameras that are unreliable. what i know now is that panasonic ip cameras are reliable and affordable, $100/camera. i left my camera on for weeks with no problem. these cameras are stand alone and connect directly to your cable modem. i have tested over time warner dsl. i'm receiving a clearwire wireless modem that i can hide inside the ceiling which runs off of radio signals from clearwire, $30/month.

panasonic also offers the wifi version of the camera for $200 for no video cable installation, you only would need to connect power plug. also panasonic has a ptz camera for $200.

Just one more question.
I understand whats happening with the hardware;
but do I need any software to access the camera from my computer?

panasonic does not require software. you log on with username and password to a free website by panasonic. you can even control the led that's on the camera. i shut mine off so no one can see the camera if a burglar. also, the panasonic's don't look like cameras.

once you have setup your info into the panasonic website. all you need is the internet address, username, password and you can access streaming video from any computer with internet.

Same deal with this Linksys camera. Since it's a network device, you just access it and download any required codecs, viewers etc from the camera itself.

Make sure you set up a DDNS host from http://www.dyndns.org

On a side note, Panasonic's BL series cameras are crap. BB series cameras are very good and WV cameras are world class.
