Vernon L. Townsend was guarding an east Pierce County housing development. He apparently was getting out of his truck when the ground collapsed in a “mini-landslide,” said Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer. Townsend was crushed as the truck pitched forward into a ditch and wedged itself against a rock. He was found early Thursday morning.
The county medical examiner’s office said an autopsy report on Townsend was not ready Thursday night.
