I know we've talked about lighting, radios, etc.. but i'm curious as to what you have in your patrol vehicle. Is it certain things required, or optional?

I have the following in my unmarked vic...

First-Aid kit (required)
Range bag (optional of course)
12 - traffic cones (optional)
"Danger" line tape (required)
"Caution" line tape (required)
Fire extinguisher (required)
3-day supply of food and water (optional)
Rain pants and jacket
Toolbox
Windbreaker jacket
15' of rope

I know I am missing something.. but thats pretty much what I have at all times.

spare batteries, flashlight, maybe a small roll of duct tape couldn't hurt.

I have a go bag that has quite a number of things in it, spare torch, phone charger, tape, nylon cord, space blanket, batteries, dry soup/beverage powder. spare mag, extra socks & undies (this IS Houston I'm talking about), waterproof map, maybe a bit of light reading.

The logbook.

And that's it.

I've asked for a simple first aid kit, but got the runaround. I've also asked them to repair some more serious mechanical issues with the car for over a month now, but they keep delaying it. Yeah, it's all documented.

No issued patrol vehicle at this time, but my humble little '91 Ranger is nicely equipped for most anything.

In the cab:
Me
Paperwork (in a file that I mounted in the back seat area)
At least 10 cheap flashlights (I got most of them for free and keep them around for emergency response-type instances. Those from TEXAS know how fast the weather can go to hell. Handed out many of them this year when the weather got really bad over the summer and we had multiple power outages on sites I was working while they were still occupied)
A whole crapload of spare batteries (old tacklebox full of all sizes)
Custom First aid kit (again, old tacklebox full of neat stuff)
Spotlights
Power inverter
Laptop
TV
DVD player
Thermoelectric cooler
Bug spray
Cooking utensils (I do alot of static posts in BFE)
Some kind of food, usually soup, etc.
Extra boots, socks, drawers, undershirt
Deoderant, Toothbrush, Axe body spray
Gun box with OC spray, baton, Leatherman, pocketknife, etc. inside
Extra ammo
Duty weapon
Radio
Cheap 2-way radios (No one likes extraneous chatter on the company radios when two guards are communicating across site. These work great)

In the bed:
Tool box (used to be a mechanic, can fix most anything roadside)
Vehicle fluids
Jumper Cables
Gas Grill
Rain suits (in tool box, always carry more than 1)
Rain Boots
Folding chair
Ice chest
AT LEAST 2 gallons of potable water

I porbably forgot something. Before they start...this is a TRUCK, I have bed space and would carry most of what is in there regardless of profession. Boy Scouts taught me well.

1. you don't have to call me good lord, doug will suffice :-)
2. I actually am looking for a hot plate. See, I work out in BFE alot. I mean 20 miles to the nearest gas station at times. If I am there for 16 hrs/day, I like to be prepared.

Here's a cute story about body bags. We had them in all of our cruisers. When I was a a young patrolman, there was a Sgt. that was always on my case. I had enough of this guy and one night I hit a skunk in the roadway.

I put the skunk in a body bag and hid it in some nearby woods. Several months later, when he was giving me a hard time, I retrieved the skunk from the woods and attached the body bag to the underneath of his patrol car. (We all had assigned - take home cars then). I really secured the skunk between the frame rails so it could not be seen by just walking around the car and looking underneath. I then cut a hole in the bag.

It was some period of time before he found the body bag. He ran the car thru the carwash a few times and could not get rid of the smell. Finally the car was placed on a hoist and the mechanics found it.

I suspect he knew who had done it, but he never approached me about it, and he never screwed with me again.

You can buy destructive devices if you have an ATF Destructive Device stamp for each device. This gets expensive, as the DD tax is 200 dollars per device or round.

When I was reading about 37mm "grenades" and their launchers, it became obvious that you could purchase a 40mm launcher, get a 200 dollar DD stamp for the weapon, then make your own "real" grenades. You need an ATF Destructive Device Manufacturer License to do so, and need to apply for a DD tax stamp for each round you make, but its entirely legal to do so if your state doesn't impose more stringent DD laws.

A lot of guys who buy 203s in 40mm go ahead and get the DD stamp, DD Manufacturer License, and load up pryo stuff for prettiness. They're already spending several grand on the launcher itself, so why not go all out?

Those who buy 37mm launchers usually don't bother, but the second they fire a projectile (instead of a signaling or illumination round) through their 37mm, they're federal felons. :)

Same goes with flashbangs. If you find someone who will sell, you get the tax stamp for each device, you can walk out the store with em.

Indeed, they are not. Most places won't sell you one. I know places to get launchers and gas/flares and stuff, but not distraction devices.

The liability risk is just not woth it for someone who will only purchase 1 or 2 of them.

Also, not all destructive devices are available to the public, with or without the $200.00 tax.
