Laws, I must (or other company member) have 3 years experience as a supervisor. I have very extensive Law Enforcement experience as a police officer for several years and have worked much private security. I can't say that I know a qualified person in NC but look closely at the regulations to make sure you don't qualify before taking on a partner for that purpose.

It might be worthwhile, however, to seek out a person in NC that is familiar with the market. Scoring the first few contracts fairly quickly is key and if you are unfamiliar with the market, that can be tough.

Ditto regarding NC law. Even though CT requires 5 years supervisory experience, I believe that LE time can be counted toward that requirement. NC might have a similar arrangement.

I think it's a bit over the top, personally, because I could have supervised a group of Mcdonalds workers and be qualified by the state, whereas my leo experience apparently doesn't mean much without the title. I'm sorry but that seems like load of steamin...you know. So your telling me the almighty NC DOJ will NOT allow you, a seasoned police officer, to start up a private security company just because you don't have 3 years in a supervisory capacity?

I would start looking at your past experiences to see if anything I mean ANYTHING could be deemed as supervisory, FTO, instruction anything. I mean thats just ridiculous... I know there are a bunch of hacks and wannabe's in security but damn. :eek:

If seems to me the further East you go the more wierder and stricter the state level govt oppresses ptivate security. Florida Sec. 493 seems scary as hell from what Corbier has often been referring to... Although at times I would like to see a s/o not only get fired but arrested for leaving their post for stupid stuff...

Several states want supervisory experience. Just because you're a former law enforcement officer doesn't mean that you have the required business management or supervisory experience to successfully create a company responsible for the safety of the public in private places.

This is why IASIR has placed such requirements in their model security legislation bill, which many states use.

I left law enforcement to start a PI company. I had a commitment from a group of attorneys. I applied for a license and took the test, in Ohio, for both private investigations and security guard. The price was only $50 more.

Little did I know that the private security part was going to take off. At the time I received my license there was no requirement of "supervisory experience."

One thing I will tell you is, unless you have money to fall back on during start up dont try right now! The economy sucks. It is very difficult to get work in Florida right now.
