View Full Version : Duty Weapon?

For those of you who carry on the job, what is your primary carry weapon?

Mine is a Glock 22!

For those who manage armed guards/officers, do you issue your officers their weapons or allow them to carry what they want?

I allow my officers to carry what they feel comfortable with, within reason, must be semi auto, no smaller than 9mm, no large than .45!

I largely prefer the .40, but I carry a .357 out of comfort and familiarity.

I am also a big 40 cal fan. I have carried an M&P 40c for about 2 years now and I love it.

as for my guards and their weapons. I prefer they carry what they feel comfortable carrying. about half of mine are off duty police/peace officers so they carry their duty weapon which if im not mistaken are all 40 cal.

2001 - 2010 I was issued a contract-specific Glock 22 .40S&W

1996 - 1999 I worked for a small company and was the firearms instructor, carried a S&W M66 (with .38spl ammo per state regs), a Glock 17, 22, & 23 (at different times) and a S&W 4506. I also carried a Winchester 1300 Defender.

Now, in TX in what is the worst job I've ever had (and seeing things I have only read about), I carry a flashlight and harsh words.

Yes, I worked in a state that forbid .357Mag ammo but allowed 9mm, 45ACP, 10MM, even a 12ga shotgun :D

I am not currently an armed guard, however if I was. I would carry my person Tuarus PT92, its 9mm and similar in design to the Beretta 92 (it is a licensed copy of the Beretta). The main reason for carrying it is that I am comfortable with it, and that too me is what matters most. The officer needs to feel confident and comfortable with what they are carrying so when the SHTF the guard is not fumbling, he is right on target and mitigating the threats as needed.

I am not a manager; the company I work for does not issue its officers with a duty weapon. Officers can carry any semi automatic as long as its 9mm and up. Officers can carry 10mm if they want. My company I work for employs officers for a private estate. We furnish are own duty belt and duty weapon. We are reimbursed for our uniforms. This is tan bdu’s and black or blue polo shirt. We are required to wear vests at night only. The owner has no problem with us wearing vests during the day but most officers don't.

I feel the same way. Like i said, I let my officers carry their own weapon. But I do know a couple companys that issue there officers there duty weapons, but they both have fairly extensive training, and require everyone to qualify. So in turn they are comfortable with it.

Yeah this is at least better then handing a weapon and saying ok there ya go...but issuing and training everyone is not going to be cheap. It is much more cost effective and reliable to verify their own training they have received and make a copy and keep on record.

As a police officer, I carry a 9mm.

When I worked for the Army, my primary was a 5.56mm & my secondary was a 9mm.

When I worked in private armed security for a while, I would carry a .40 S&W Caliber Springfield XD 4" if the company and their insurance company allowed it.

When I work executive protection on the side, it depends on several factors and I prefer not to get into.

For disaster security work that I'm on a call-up roster for, I have a custom .223 M4 rifle, custom 10 & 12 gauge shotguns, 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP caliber pistols in popular models such as Glock, Springfield Armory, and FN.

On duty I'm carrying a Beretta 92D Centurion (9mm).

With my city department I carried a HK USP (.40). Least favorite so far.

At my first federal job my sidearm was a Glock 22 (.40). I still miss that Glock. :(

Once I manage to find myself a part-time security position on the side, I'll have my

Kimber CDP II (.45) and my Glock 17 (9mm) to utilize.

I've carried the same revolver, a S&W Model 28 .357 since 1981. I've become quite proficient with the old Highway Patrolman, so I don't plan on switching guns any time soon. I had Nite Sites installed in 1982, but they quit glowing about 15 years ago.

I often carry a S&W Model 19 .357 with a 2" barrel off duty.

I took a Dremel tool and ground the "Llama" name off the side of the slide hoping to lift the

curse on the pistol! I don't think it worked, considering that the pistol is still in several

pieces. :o I have to look at the bright side, though. At least I can still throw it at someone

Back when I started in police work in 76 I could only afford a Ruger Security Six. A state trooper friend gave me a Clarino straight drop holster and belt rig with a leather hammer loop. Man it looked good.
Sold it for a Model 13 S&W in a Judge holster
Sold it for a Model 65 S&W
Sold it for a Springfield 1911A1 45 in a high rise holster. I wanted to know WHERE it was all the time.
Retired with a Colt officers' model in a Galco shoulder holster.
Son got me a Springfield XP subcompact in .40 for Christmas. Sweeeeet!

I haven't shot in years and still X'ed the 10 ring rapid fire at 12 feet.

We all carry the Smith & Wesson M&P 40 caliber. It is a very ergonomic pointing weapon. You can switch the magazine release to left handed if you need to. This weapon shoots very well, never had any kind of malfunction shooting it, I have fired over 3000 rounds through this weapon.

Here's a quick question for you. Did you decide to go with the stainless slide because of the bad reputation of the finish on the P228. ( Im not sure if the P229 model is any different ). Still love the gun hasn't jammed yet and I live in a desert so I don't have to worry about rust as much if the finish wears off a little.

I carry either a Glock 19 or a Glock 34...depending on what type of work I am doing and how i am dressed. I do both residential security and PSD....so, the G34 doesn't conceal as well under a suit as the G19
The rest of the guys that work for me carry different weapons. Mostly you will find Glock pistols in 9mm or 40...There are a couple of Taurus 24/7 guys that carry 45 or 9, a couple of Sigs in 9 and 45.....but mostly you will find Glocks.....G22, G19 (most popular), G23, G26, G34

Back in the day, as they say, when I worked security years ago, I was issued first a Colt Official Police with mother of pearl grips. Later with another company, it was a Smith & Wesson heavy barrel Model 10.

My current job isn't armed at this time, but plans are to get the training done before spring. The Captain tells me we will be able to use our own weapons if we want. If that's the case, I'm a revolver guy basically, so I will probably go with a Smith & Wesson Model 15, Combat Masterpiece (38 special). If they prefer a semi-auto, a Smith & Wesson 39-2 (9mm) will be my first choice.

Personally, I carry a Ruger SR9 in a custom made nylon holster (that set me back a little bit, but it was totally worth it). I used to have a 92FS in a SERPA lvl 3, but it was just too heavy for me, carrying it for 8-10 hours at a time. I'm not exactly a big person, so eventually I just HAD to have something lighter.

Expecting fun to be made of me now. ;)

Yup, I took a quick snapshot. Sorry for the quality and size.

The guy who made it is an armorer for my local PD and a friend of my father's. Basically, he cannibalized a Glock17 Accumold, recut and remolded the inside, and reattached the other parts.

Why did I trust him to do this? He used to work for Bianchi. It's a perfect fit and perfect draw now.

I got the Ruger SR40 about a month ago and it's a really nice shooting firearm with very low recoil unlike my Glock 22. I'm currently carring a Ruger SR9c on the position I am working on. My first duty firearm was a Ruger security six. Then went to a Glock 17 and carried it for about 15 years and now carry the Ruger P345 as my main duty weapon. If I lived in free state I would still carry the Glock 17 but due to our 10 round limit mags I prefer to a carry a 45 at a loss of two rounds but bigger badder rounds.

Thank you, I happen to agree. It hasn't seen much action, just 300 rounds or so in guard card quals and at the range. The suede-lined duty holster helps too. Oh and I'm a fanatic about field-stripping and thorough cleaning.

That model is the 90Two, a variant of the 92 and M9 family... a lot of Beretta purists bash it but the grips were just right for me, and I liked the availability of a .40S&W bore. ;)

I've carried a Glock 19 as a armed guard and conceal carry for some 17 years in Virginia. Awaiting for my security clearance to start work on federal GSA contracts in the Washington DC area require they carry Smith & Wesson's full sized M&P pistols in 9mm with night sights. Non government sites carry Glock 17s. I admit I will miss my Glock but with the government sites paying up to $10 more an hour I can live with the loss. :D
I've owned a M&P in 40S&W for 4 years. I won it in a raffle and having no experience with it and being a Glock fan I threw in the safe and only with this new job did I pull it out shoot it. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease it handled 40S&W. Never been a fan of 40S&W for its snappy recoil in the Glock which has been corrected in the new 4th generation Glocks (double recoil spring). I've owned other 40s in steel or alloy frames like my Sig P229. :) Having been qualified by DHS (Dept of Homeland Security) with the M&P in 9mm (mandated 40 hours firearms training) :p I don't feel uncomfortable defending myself with it. Having some sites requiring requalifications every 6 months and with the threat of getting pulled from the site for failing one (can't work till you requalify and after 30 days you're terminated) I purchased one in 9mm for practice. I shoot every 2 weeks (on payday go to Walmart and grab 100 rounds) to keep my score up! :D

Relatively recently I've begun training with, and carrying, an FNP 45 tactical. I am also currently in the process of acquiring the matching Osprey suppressor, cause why the hell not. My supervisors have allowed me to carry this weapon, though the suppressor would not be allowed on duty. I like this weapon a lot, although I almost went with the HK Mark 23. I'm glad I purchased this though, as I have found it to be an exceptional weapon. I previously used a Glock 22, although it is getting old and likely nearing the end of its service life. The FNP is performing flawlessly, although I did have work out the differences in trigger between the two.

The reason we get so many different opinions about the relative merits of any given weapon or caliber of weapon is that we usually fail to specify (a) what load we're talking about, (b) the situational factors and (c) the environment in which the weapon is likely to be used. Without this information we wind up comparing apples to oranges a lot of the time.

For instance, I still believe that the revolver is the best format for self-defense concealed carry by citizens who don't get to shoot much, just due to the sheer simplicity of loading, shooting and cleaning these weapons - and because of their reliability. They don't jam. The reason I put importance on all these factors is because the need for the weapon for the citizen almost always involves an element of surprise, and all I want the surprised citizen to have to do is point-and-shoot. No safeties, no jacking rounds into chambers, no jams to clear - nothing. It's also usually close-range shooting, and a modicum of skill is all anyone needs to put 6 in center mass at close range almost instinctively. If that doesn't do it, a few more rounds probably won't save the situation.

But on the other hand, I carry both revolvers and pistols in a variety of models and calibers depending partly on the situation and also on what I'm wearing, and I can do this because I know I can use any of them without hesitation. People say ".40 is better than 9mm", but I can show you loads in both calibers that render such statements meaningless. I can even describe situations where the right .32 caliber load would be preferable to almost any 9mm load and as such I have no hesitancy to carry my .32 Beretta with Speer Gold Dot HPs at times rather than the bigger guns. I don't own anything in .40 - if you're going to step up from 9mm, you might as well step up to .45, IMHO.

Lots of things to think about when we talk guns. I love most of them for one purpose/setting/environment or another and I buy and trade them more often than my wife cares for. BUT I'm not confused about my overall favorite. If you took every gun (including my rifles and shotguns) except one gun that would be all I'd ever have to survive with, whether urban, suburban or wilderness setting, home defense, etc. for the rest of my life - even hunting to survive - I'd keep the .357 Python, hands down. I'd keep the Remington, but when you run a 12-gauge down your pants leg it makes you walk funny, and it's likely to be misinterpreted. :D
